Coventry Family History Society
Coventry Family History Society was formed in 1994 by a small number of local genealogists to provide mutual support and share resources. We promote and encourage the study of family history, genealogy and local history in the City of Coventry and its surroundings.
Our membership quickly grew to between two and three hundred members, where it has remained until the present. It is flourishing by providing help and support to the growing number of people researching their Coventry ancestors. The membership is composed of approximately 125 local members, the remainder being dispersed around the UK and overseas.
As the family history has expanded, it has become easier to carry out research from a distance via the internet; however, we are making a positive contribution by recording and publishing local information including burial records, memorial inscriptions and parish indexes. We have also digitised the 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871 Coventry censuses in full and the 1891 and 1901 censuses as name indexes. We also have some more quirky offerings, such as the transcription of a large number of pawnbrokers tickets, discovered in a local attic. These may not offer much direct genealogical information, but provide a surprisingly interesting insight into social history. We have also recently completed a small project recording the schoolboy graffiti in the medieval Old Grammar School and we have already tentatively associated some of the carved names with entries in the 1841 census.
To further support people who do not live local to Coventry, we have a small team who will gladly search for a single name within our databases.

Our meetings are normally on the second Monday of each month. The meeting room is open from 7:00pm and the business of the meeting starts at 7:30pm. There is a nominal charge of £2 (£4 for non-members) towards the hire of the room and refreshments. We have a guest speaker at most meetings, after which there is a chance to mingle, chat, and visit the bookstall and library. Beginners can also use this time to obtain help from experienced researchers, who are always keen to demonstrate their knowledge!
Meetings are held at:
Old Coventrians RFC, Tile Hill Lane, Coventry, CV4 9DE.
Non-members are always welcome.
A quarterly journal is produced containing a variety of articles concerned with local and family history. Members’ views and details of members’ research interests are included together with reports of meetings and local events. We are especially proud of the quality of our journal, both in content and print quality, since we consider this the main link between the society and its remote members.
Project work is an integral part of our operations and a long list of projects have been completed and dovetailed into national schemes. Much of the completed work carried out by members is now available in our own publications, descriptions of which can be seen on the bookshop pages. In this modern age, the majority of our information is now issued on PC compatible CDs as searchable databases. A full list of our publications is available on our website www.covfhs.com.
The Society website also has relevant information and useful links to other family history sites. The full calendar of meetings is available online. There is also the bookshop list, together with a downloadable order form.
The society is a member of the West Midlands Group of Family History Societies and affiliated to the Federation of Family History Societies.
