B for Brickwall

by admin in Uncategorised
Brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls aren’t there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to show us how badly we want things.” Prof. Randy Pausch

Does this sound familiar when it comes to your genealogical research?

Well, you’re not alone!

Oftentimes brick walls turn out to be diversions, that you can find a way around by looking at your problem from a different perspective. Other times, it feels like you’ve really hit a dead end.

Unfortunately, the answers can’t be plucked from thin air. It will depend on the nature of the brick wall and why you can’t seem to make any advances in that area.

Here are a few ‘brick walls’ you may happen to come across.

Names

  • Maiden names
  • Middle names
  • Common family names
  • Short family names
  • Street name changes

Moving or ‘missing people’

  • Towns and occupations
  • Local histories

Records

  • Not listed in census records
  • Records you need aren’t yet available
  • Missing marriage/ birth/ death record
  • You’ve exhausted records completely!

As you may or may not be aware, the reasons you can’t find what you’re looking for may be because:

  • You’re searching very specifically
  • You’re searching too generally
  • You’re not looking in the right places
  • You’re not recording information or making use of what you have

And the question that usually follows is, ‘HOW or WHERE do I begin?’

So what can THE Genealogy Show do to help?

If you’ve hit a brick wall, that’s all the more reason to turn to us!

Why not tap into some expert knowledge with a personal wizard consultation.

Our experts will be available for a one to one session where you can take advantage of their expertise and ask for assistance if you’ve reached a brick wall or pose questions on where to potentially locate information.

I won’t be in England for the show in June but am stopping by as a fellow A to Zed-er.

I love puzzles – some of the take longer to solve than others but solving them is rewarding when you pull all the evidence together.

I look forward to reading your other genealogical posts over the month.

I keep flinging myself at brick walls and not giving up. Finally found the right parents for my 2nd great-grandmother, so now I’m working away at her grandparents. Hope springs eternal….
